How to Make Candy Corn Play Doh

This DIY edible play doh is a fantastic sensory activity that kids can help make and then enjoy playing with. The texture is a bit different from regular play dohβ€”it’s greasier and firmer, but just as fun!

Ingredients and Materials Needed:

  • 2 cups of candy corn
  • 1 tablespoon of water
  • 3 tablespoons of coconut oil (or Crisco)
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Powdered sugar
  • Spatula
  • Cutting board or similar surface for kneading

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Mix Ingredients

In your microwave-safe bowl, combine the candy corn, water, and coconut oil. Give it a good stir to mix everything together.

Step 2: Microwave

Heat the mixture in the microwave for 30 seconds at a time. After each interval, stir thoroughly to help it melt evenly. Repeat this process about 6 times or until very smooth and totally melted, but be careful not to over-microwave as it can cause the mixture to harden and become unusable.

Step 3: Prepare Your Work Surface

While the candy corn mixture is heating, cover your work surface with powdered sugar. This will help prevent sticking and will be used to thicken your play doh.

Step 4: Combine with Powdered Sugar

Once the candy corn mixture is smooth and fully melted, carefully pour it onto your sugared surface. It will be VERY HOT, so please ensure kids are kept at a safe distance during this part. Sprinkle more powdered sugar on top of the mixture.

Step 5: Knead the Dough

Using a spatula, begin to mix the powdered sugar into the melted candy corn. As it starts to cool, you can begin kneading with your hands.

Continue adding powdered sugar until you achieve a play doh-like texture.

Safety Tip: Make sure the play doh has cooled completely before letting children handle it to avoid any burns from the hot mixture.

Step 6: Play Time

Now that your Candy Corn Play Doh is ready and cool, it’s time for the kids to play! You can use Halloween-themed cookie cutters, paper straws cut in half, plastic knives, or any other play doh tools you have at home. You might even add pipe cleaners, pom poms, or a little glitter for extra fun.
