Celebrating Valentines Day with kids? How about making a special breakfast - heart shaped cinnamon rolls! Here's how easy they are to make, from canned dough!
I have been having so much fun making Valentines day treats for my kids this year.
I keep it super simple, but love making little tweaks to our normal foods to make them a bit more festive.
That's what these heart shaped cinnamon rolls are - I mean, get real, it's canned cinnamon rolls!
But adding a little shape, a bit of food coloring, some fun sprinkles - and suddenly they are special and magical!
My kids are such picky eaters, this is much more likely to be a hit than anything fancy anyways.
Here's how to make them!
How to make heart shaped cinnamon rolls
Supplies to make:
- Canned cinnamon roll dough
- Red food coloring
- Butter knife
- Small bowl & spoon to mix icing
- Optional: Valentines sprinkles
Steps to make:
STEP 1: Preheat
Preheat the oven according to the instructions on your roll of dough, paying attention to different temperatures (and times!) for a non-stick pan and/or separated rolls.
STEP 2: Roll
Open the can of dough, separate the rolls, and lay them out on a lined pan.
STEP 3: Shape
Unroll your dough. Roll back from the other end to create two round parts, and press together to create a heart shape.
I like to use my fingers to shape the point at the bottom a bit, too!
Do your rolls not un-roll? Annoying but we can work with that!
Use the back end of a butter knife and/or your fingers to shape each into a heart shape.
Here's what that looks like:
STEP 4: Bake
Bake according the the can's instructions. This varies by brand - for me was 8 minutes at 400 degrees.
TIP: if you take the rolls out halfway through, you can use your knife to re-enforce the heart indent at the top of the rolls. (This applies to the kife-shaped rolls and not the unrolled ones).
STEP 5: Mix icing
While that bakes, add your frosting to a small bowl. Add 2-3 drops of red food coloring and stir to combine.
STEP 6: Frost + Decorate
When done and slightly cooled, frost and add sprinkles! Serve and enjoy!
