Looking for Thanksgiving decor with a purpose? Here is how to make an easy Thankful Tree for Thanksgiving decor and activity!
This year, I am trying to put the thankful back in Thanksgiving.
It’s so easy to get caught up in the food and the travel and the people and the shopping.
I want to use this day as a chance to pause and reflect on all of the good things in our life.
I have been explaining thankfulness and gratitude to my kids, and wanted them to really have those elements on display during our Thanksgiving dinner.

How to make an easy Thankful Tree
Here’s how easy it is to set up a thankful tree for Thanksgiving!
Supplies needed:
- Vase
- Rocks – optional, to weigh down vase if it is not stable
- Branches or sticks
- Paper leaves
- Markers
- Twine
- Hot glue OR hole punch
Steps to make:
Step 1: Prep your vase
Select a vase to put your branches into. I used this rattan vase, which is very lightweight.
To keep it from tipping over, I added rocks to the bottom. If your vase falls over, just add something heavy inside it!
Step 2: Add branches
Add branches inside your vase. You might need to break them so the length is correct. I also broke off some of the smaller twigs for a cleaner look.
Step 3: Prep your leaves
Now, prep your leaves. I got these pre-cut paper leaves because it was cheaper than buying a leaf punch and fall colored paper!
But, you can also free hand leaves or use real leaves even!
Cut strips of twine. You can either hole punch your leaf and tie a loop of twin through the hole or tie a loop of twine and hot glue it to the leaves!
Step 4: Write on them
Have guests use a marker to write what they are thankful for on each leaf. Small kids can get help or draw a picture of what they are thankful for!
Here are a ton of ideas for things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!
Step 5: Hang and be thankful!
Hang the leaves on the branches and display somewhere prominent like the mantel or kitchen table.
Take time to read everyone’s leaves and to be thankful for all that you have.
Have a happy Thanksgiving!
