How to Make Coffee Filter Turkeys
This easy craft project uses basic supplies to create colorful turkey decorations that are perfect for celebrating Thanksgiving.
Materials Needed:
- Paper coffee filters
- Washable markers
- Spray bottle filled with water
- Paper or a plastic placemat (for a mess-free workspace)
- Brown craft paint
- Small paintbrush
- Wooden clothespins
- Tacky glue
- Small googly eyes
- Yellow/orange and red construction paper
- Scissors
Step-by-Step Guide:
Step 1: Color the Coffee Filters:
Hand out a coffee filter to each child and let them color with washable markers. They can be as creative as they like with their designs. A mix of fall colors like red, orange, and yellow works wonderfully!
Step 2: Spray with Water:
After the kids finish coloring, have them lightly spray the coffee filter with water. This helps the colors blend together beautifully, creating a lovely watercolor effect. Remember to lay down a placemat or paper to catch any drips.
Step 3: Dry the Filters:
Allow the coffee filters to dry completely, preferably overnight. They should be flat and crisp for the next steps.
Step 5: Paint the Clothespins:
While the filters are drying, paint the wooden clothespins brown to form the turkey’s body.
Step 6: Attach Googly Eyes and Paper:
Usc scissors to cut a beak (triangle) out of yellow or orange paper and a gobble out of red paper.
Once the paint has dried, glue two small googly eyes and paper accents onto each clothespin.
Step 7: Assemble the Turkeys:
Fold the dry coffee filter in half to create a semi-circle shape, which will be the turkey’s feathers.
Apply tacky glue along the side of the clothespin and attach the folded coffee filter. Adjust to make sure it looks like a turkey’s fanned tail feathers.
Step 8: Final Touches and Display:
Once the glue has dried, your coffee filter turkeys are ready to be displayed! You can place them around the house or use them as part of your Thanksgiving table setting.
I actually love them as a placecard holder for Thanksgiving, too!
These Coffee Filter Turkeys are not only a fun way to engage kids in a creative activity, but they also help in decorating your home for Thanksgiving in a personal and unique way.
The project is perfect for kids of all ages and requires minimal adult supervision.
