Check out this easy fireworks painting for kids – using toilet paper rolls! Perfect fourth of July craft or new years eve craft!
My kids don’t go to preschool yet and so they are honestly clueless about different holidays throughout the year.
I mean, Christmas and Halloween there are neighborhood decorations to prepare them, but other holidays are just right over their heads.
So, I try to plan some themed crafts for kids to make them more aware that holidays are coming.
This is a super simple craft activity that I whipped up as a patriotic craft for independence day. Pair it with a 4th of July Sensory Bottle for extra patriotic fun!
However, it could totally work to ring in the new year, too!
These are perfect for hanging up to decorate your playroom or kids space. Another great playroom decoration ideas is this Patriotic Suncatcher Kids Craft!
Toilet paper roll crafts are great because they are basically free – just save old rolls to use when you have a great idea!
Anyways, here’s my fireworks paper towel roll painting idea for kids!
Fireworks art with a toilet paper roll
This is a super easy and fun craft for toddlers and preschoolers!
Supplies needed:
- toilet paper roll or paper towel roll
- scissors
- paint (red and blue) acrylic paint/washable kids paint
- paper plates
- craft paper
Steps to make fireworks paper towel roll art:
- If using paper towel rolls, cut them in half to create 2 shorter rolls.
- Cut slits 1/4 to 1/2 an inch wide about halfway up your toilet paper rolls.
- Bend the slit strips so they are at a 90 degree angle.
- Pour paint into paper plates.
- Allow kids to dip the folded end of the toilet paper roll into paint and then push onto their paper.

Want something more dramatic? Older kids will enjoy layering different colors on top of each other. Try to make toilet paper rolls with shorter and longer spikes for a layered look!
