Looking for a screen-free way to stay connected with your kids? In this BoT Talk review, I share how it helps give my kids more independence—and me a lot more peace of mind.
This post was sponsored by BoT Talk. All opinions are true and my own. Thanks for supporting the brands that make CelebratingWithKids possible!
There are so many fun milestones that come with your kids getting older. While I love playing in the backyard with my kids, recently they have been wanting to play with the neighbors without me or my husband right up in their space.
This sort of makes my mama heart sad, though I do think back to all the times I wished they could just be independent! Being a mom is so many mixed emotions.
I do want my kids to have independence, but my brain immediately jumps into worry mode.

Today's world makes this balance tough – of course I want to give my kids freedom, but I really do not want to depend on a smartphone or even a smart watch so that I still feel connected to them.
That's why I was so excited to learn about BoT Talk. This is a very smart device that allows you to keep track of and communicate with your kids without needing a screen.
Today I want to share our honest experience, how it works in real life, and why it could be a game changer for your family!

BoT Talk Review
After trying BoT Talk with my kids, I wanted to share how it actually works in everyday life, what I’ve loved most, and a few things to keep in mind if you’re considering it for your family.

What Is BoT Talk?
BoT Talk is a small, screen-free GPS tracker and communication device for parents of kids. It allows parents to track the location of their child and stay connected through quick voice messages.
I love that the device is small, lightweight, and comes with a clip to easily attach to backpacks or a lanyard.
The BoT Talk device is designed for encouraging independence in kids aged 5+, while still keeping parents informed and in contact.
BoT Talk was inspired by the Japanese concept of Mimamori, which means “watching over with care.” It’s the idea that parents can give kids freedom and independence while still keeping a gentle eye on them from a distance.
I love that balance — it’s not about constant surveillance or tracking every move. It’s about connection, awareness, and peace of mind for both parent and child. BoT Talk really captures that feeling in a super practical way.

What Are the Best Uses for BoT Talk?
The BoT Talk is perfect for families who are not ready for their kids to have a smartwatch or phone but still want to be able to communicate with them.
It's great for busy parents who want to see where their kids are without constant texting or calling.
I love it for after school play, field trips, or visiting friends nearby.
I have heard of families using it to send messages or updates while kids are at camp or after school activities. You can also leave them messages during school about changes to their after school routine to prepare them.
It's a great solution for peace of mind for busy parents!
How Does the BoT Talk App Work?
In addition to the physical device, BoT includes an app for the adult's phone.
There is a simple pairing process, and the app itself is extremely simple and straightforward to use.

You can view your child’s real-time location (including their path to that location), send and receive short voice messages, and set safe zones or alerts.
This app does require a monthly paid plan (GPS & Talk for $6.99) and you cannot use the device without a paid plan.

One more thing to keep in mind: BoT Talk messages aren’t truly instant like a text message. The device checks for new messages about every 1.5 to 3 minutes, depending on the mode you select. So it's designed to leave messages for your child that they can check when they are able.
Both you and your child also need to be in an area with decent cell coverage for messages to go through smoothly. If reception is spotty, messages may take a little longer to send or receive.
How Can Kids Wear BoT Talk?
The BoT comes with a clip, and the option to additionally purchase a silicone case.
You can:
- Clip it to a backpack or sports bag
- Hang it on a lanyard
- Hook it on a belt loop
- Zip it in a pocket
- Or attach it anywhere you could attach a carabiner.

I personally prefer to put it on a lanyard for backyard play (my kids usually don't have belt loops!) or on their backpack for school events.
The device is small and weighs only about 2 ounces, so it's easy to carry. It is also durable (especially with the case) and water-resistant.

It's easy to carry and the kids think it's pretty cool!
Things to Consider Before Buying
There are a few other factors that you should consider before deciding if this is the right purchase for your family. No product is perfect, but here’s what’s good to know before buying.
As I have mentioned, this does require a monthly plan. The pricing is low, and worth it for peace of mind, but it is a consideration.
Tracking depends on cell coverage, so rural areas might have varied results.
Also note that if you cancel your paid plan, the SIM card inside the device is cut off and it cannot be cut back on again - you have to purchase a new device.
So, you cannot plan to have the device and cut it on only for a sports season and then re-activate it later. This is, in my opinion, very important to consider and determine how you will use the device before purchasing.
Also remember that messaging is not instant. It is not designed for chatter back and forth, but more for sending broadcasts.
And most of all, this device is not a replacement for supervision. It is a connection tool. You should use your judgement for what is safe for your child.

My Final Thoughts on BoT Talk
I really love the idea of BoT talk, especially for elementary aged kids that want just a little bit of freedom.
Whether they are in the backyard or playing at the neighbor's house without me, I feel safer knowing I can track their location and send them messages when I need to.
I want to put off getting my kids screened devices for as long as possible. BoT Talk is a refreshing approach to technology for kids — more supportive than intrusive.
