How to make a Dinosaur Train Family Halloween Costume

Does your kid love the PBS show Dinosaur Train? Here’s how to make a Dinosaur Train Family Halloween Costume they are sure to love!

Halloween is a special time to spend together as a family, doing trick or treating and decorating your house and yard.

Maybe the best thing to do for Halloween is have a themed costume idea that the whole family can get in on!

Our son LOVES the PBS show Dinosaur Train and said that was what he wanted to do for Halloween this year.

So, we worked together to come up with a Dinosaur Train Family Halloween Costume for four people that you can easily replicate for your family!

Dinosaur Train Themed Halloween Costumes

If your kid loves Dinosaur Train, you obviously already know all the characters and I’m sure your child has a favorite.

But after doing tons of research, there aren’t a lot of Dinosaur Train Halloween costumes out there!

It’s kind of an older show and there’s not a lot of swag or much of anything available for purchase.

When we wore these costumes, I can’t tell you how many teenagers passing by said something along the lines of “Oh sweet, Dinosaur Train! I used to watch that when I was a kid!”

Dinosaur Train Halloween Costumes

Seriously though, there’s not much pre-made shopping out there for Dinosaur Train, especially not the main characters.

But, luckily you’re in the right place to figure out how to do a Dinosaur Train family Halloween costume that is a mix of a little bit of pre-purchased costumes, DIY and using up what you have around the house.

For this tutorial, we’re going to be looking at Buddy, Tiny, Mr. Conductor, and Dr. Scott the Paleontologist.

Buddy Tyrannosaurus Dinosaur Train Halloween Costume

The best option for a Buddy the T-Rex Halloween costume is to buy the best-selling full-sized body suit on Amazon.

Buddy Tyrannosaurus Dinosaur Train Halloween Costume

This Buddy costume is great. It comes with a full body suit with built in hand claws, slip on shoe covers, and, best of all, a huge Buddy the T-Rex head.

This is a shockingly good representation of Buddy and not some sort of knock off, bootleg version.

His markings, eyes and teeth are all perfect.

This was a really perfect option for a Buddy Tyrannosaurus Halloween costume.

You could try to make your own DIY version of this, but that would require some serious sewing skills and you probably aren’t looking at this post if that’s what you’re going for.

This is a cheap option and comes in two sizes for young children.

Tiny Pteranodon Dinosaur Train Halloween Costume

Similar to Buddy, the best option for a Tiny Pteranodon Halloween costume is to buy the best-selling full-sized body suit on Amazon.

Granted, there’s not a lot of size choices, and we used this on a one year old, but it worked out just fine because she has a really big head.

Again, the costume is right on point for Tiny, down to the markings and eyes.

The costume even has wings under the arms and looks really great.

This is a low-cost option for a Tiny Pteranodon Halloween costume and looks very authentic.

Mr. Conductor Dinosaur Train Halloween Costume

Ok, now we’re taking a DIY, make-it-at-home turn for Mr. Conductor.

There aren’t any costumes you can purchase outright for Mr. Conductor, so we made this one out of bits and pieces we bought and DIYed.

First off, the purchased pieces.

We bought this red conductors hat, this red vest, this orange shirt and this gold pocket watch. All told, the total was about $50.

The final piece was buying a 24″ styrofoam cone at Michael’s and painting it orange.

To secure it to the body, you drill a hole through the cone near the bottom and then tie a rope around your waist and through the hole.

It turned out pretty good!

Dr. Scott the Paleontologist Dinosaur Train Halloween Costume

Finally, we come to Dr. Scott.

Dr. Scott is the affectionate paleontologist at the end of each Dinosaur Train episode that teaches kids about the dinosaurs they just learned about in the show.

Dr. Scott Paleontologist Halloween Costume DIY

This outfit would work for any paleontologist Halloween costume, not just Dr. Scott.

The main goal here is to wear as much khaki as possible.

Khaki shorts, a button up khaki shirt, a khaki floppy hat, paired with boots and a pair of binoculars and you’ve got your paleontologist costume.

Plus, this costume was certified by Dr. Scott himself on Twitter when we posted the picture from our other blog account!

So go outside, get into nature, and have a Happy Halloween!
