Make this fun and easy Pool Noodle Pencil Garland for back to school! A perfect DIY decoration for classrooms, playrooms, or your home to celebrate the new school year.
Last year, our Pool Noodle Pencil craft was a huge hit, so I decided to turn it into a garland version this year, perfect for decorating your playroom, classroom, or entryway to get into the school spirit!

This DIY Pool Noodle Pencil Garland is fun, bright, and gives major back-to-school energy. It’s also surprisingly easy to make, and kids will love helping you hang it up!

How to Make a Pool Noodle Pencil Garland
Here's how easy it is to make a pool noodle pencil garland!

Supplies you’ll need:
- Yellow pool noodles
- Serrated knife + cutting board
- 2" Pink duct tape
- 1" Silver duct tape
- Brown paper snow cone cups
- Black paint pen
- Hot glue tool
- Yellow and white baker’s twine
- Large-eye embroidery needle

Instructions:
STEP 1: Cut your pool noodle
Use a serrated knife on a cutting board to cut your yellow pool noodle into sections about 5" long.
I got about 10 pencils per noodle and used two noodles to make 20 total.

STEP 2: Make the eraser end
Wrap one end of each piece with 2" wide pink duct tape—this is the “eraser.”
Then wrap a strip of 1" silver duct tape over the seam between the pink and yellow—that’s the metal band.

STEP 3: Create the pencil tip
Take your brown paper snow cone cups and snip off the rim. Then cut the edge into a zig-zag pattern to make the “wood” part of the pencil.
Use your hot glue tool to glue the cone to the untaped end of the pool noodle.

Finally, use a black paint pen to color the very tip to look like pencil lead.

STEP 4: String them up
Thread a large-eye needle with baker’s twine and carefully push it straight through the pool noodle (not through the tape).
Repeat for each pencil, making sure all the seams face backward.
Tie double knots on either side of each noodle to keep them from sliding.
Hang it up with tape or command hooks and admire your back-to-school creation!

This garland is a super fun, colorful way to celebrate the new school year—whether you're decorating a homeschool corner or just getting your kids excited to head back. You could even gift one to your child’s teacher as a festive classroom surprise!
