Hana Maui Resort with kids

Considering staying in Hana on your trip to Maui? Here is a recap of our stay and everything you need to know about visiting the Hana Maui Resort with kids!

When we were planning our stay in Maui, we knew that we wanted a long stay. After all, it is quite the haul to get there from our small airport in South Carolina, and we wanted to make it worth the trip.

Since we were booking our trip on points, I decided it would be best to "resort hop" and check out different areas of the island. It also helps to spread out the types of points we were using!

I read a lot about driving the Road to Hana and how it was a beautiful trip that could be done in one day or broken up with a stay in the town of Hana itself.

If I know anything about travelling with kids, it's that trying to cram a lot into one day is a recipe for disaster.

So, we decided to spend 2 nights in Hana. This gave us 1 day to slowly drive up and do a lot of stopping. A second day to do the Black Sand beach and other activities in town. And a third day to leisurely drive back and hit any stops we missed on the way up.

With the road being our main draw, I had low expectations for the resort. I had heard it was rural and outdated and didn't have air conditioning (which was false, our room had a unit).

When we got there, we were blown away.

The property is gorgeous, surrounded by green rolling mountains and rainforest on one side and the sea on the other.

We were in a beautiful bungalow with sweeping views of the space.

And the whole area just felt chill and relaxing. I said this would be the ultimate honeymoon spot - way better than an in-town resort crawling with kids!

But it was also wonderful with our 5 and 7 year olds. They were able to run around, explore nature, and generally chill out between our two big resort stays.

Here's a peek at the Hana Maui and answers to questions you might have!

Here's what to expect with your stay in Hana.

The Grounds

This resort consists of a main building and many outbuildings, including a separate, ocean-front section across a small road. The infinity pool and hot tub as well as the bungalows are located in this ocean-front area.

The resort overall is very green and has lush, well-established plants. There are mountains all around, with views out to sea as well.

It is worth noting that there is NO beach here. The ocean is beyond a cliff - with no way to get down.

Another cool thing is that they have golf carts to transport you around the resort. They will bring you and your luggage to your room, and will pick you up and take you to your car or even to the restaurant across the street! We loved this service!

The Rooms

The Hana Maui resort offers many different levels and sizes of rooms. I booked the lowest cost room with points, but because of my Hyatt globalist status, we received an upgrade to the Bungalows.

The bungalows are standalone cottages that are setup like a duplex with 2 units in each. Because they were sold out of 2 queen bungalows, they actually gave us two adjoining king bungalows. It was an EPIC space and I am so grateful.

Each unit had a bed area, a couch, a dining table (for four but only 2 chairs) and a small kitchenette area.

They also had big decks overlooking the ocean.

This was an EPIC space and if we ever get to return I will absolutely book the bungalow to ensure we get the space. We loved the views and being in this area of the resort!

We also had the closest unit to the pool - which was great with the kids! The closer you are to the ocean, the longer you will have to walk!

The Pool

The Hana resort has a beautiful infinity pool in the bungalow area. While it's not massive, it was never too full and I think appropriately sized for the resort.

There is a waterfall off one end from a small, very shallow pool that my kids liked splashing in.

The pool is 48" deep across but it does have a ledge on both long sides.

There is also a small hot tub off the end of the pool.

There is a poolside grill that serves food and drinks from lunch until 5pm. I honestly wish it stayed open for dinner - it would have been easy to eat here while the kids swam after a long day of hiking! There aren't a ton of food options in Hana, especially by dinner time, so having this would have been nice.

I was worried about my kids being bored at this pool after a week at the Grand Wailea with it's waterslides and lazy river, but they had a fun time splashing around. I don't know that I would do a whole pool day here - but it was great for relaxing after a long day out and about!

Other Amenities

In addition to the pools, this resort has some other fun amenities.

First, there is a chip and putt golf area with 3 holes. My husband and son loved playing here and they have clubs available to borrow for free.

They also have other complimentary equipment like sports balls and bikes that you can check out!

There is a tennis and basketball court, as well, though it was being re-surfaced during our visit.

Finally, there is a fitness trail. This has a series of workout stations connected by a trail around the property. My son loved following the trail and trying out the moves!

I also wanted to note that there is free laundry at the Hana Maui Resort. There are 2 washers and 2 dryers and you can use them yourself.

This is GREAT if you are planning a long stay on Maui and Hana is the mid-point - I washed all of our clothes and was so glad we didn't have to pack 12 days worth!

Food

The Hana Maui Resort has 3 restaurants. First is the restaurant in the main building, where they serve breakfast. Then, there is the poolside grill which is primarily lunch (or very early dinner). Finally, there is the Ranch restaurant, which is actually across the street from the resort.

Breakfast is served buffet style on Sundays and a la carte otherwise. I thought the food was very good - but it was pricey. As a Hyatt Globalist, we got free breakfast, but otherwise we would not have paid for it! The buffet was $200 for the four of us and the kids didn't eat, but luckily it was comped.

We did not eat at the other two restaurants so I cannot comment. As I mentioned, the grill closed before dinner and the Ranch had a kind of boring and overpriced looking menu.

We instead ate dinner both nights at the food truck area just outside the resort. There were several choices, including picky-kid-friendly foods. Some were cash-only, so come prepared! There is a walking path from the bungalow area of the hotel straight to the food trucks that takes less than 5 minutes to walk.

There is also a general store right around the corner if you want to grab snacks or breakfast items for less than at the resort.

How to book Hana Maui resort on points

Hana Maui Resort is a Hyatt property, so it can be booked with Hyatt points.

The easiest ways to earn Hyatt points is with a Hyatt co-branded credit card or with a Chase credit card that allows you to transfer your points to Hyatt.

Currently, this resort is a category 7 Hyatt and family suites can be booked as a standard room and bungalows as a standard suite!

What to do with kids in Hana

Hana itself is a small town. But, there is a lot of hiking and outdoor activities to do in the area.

The hotel also has fliers for farms that allow kids to come and pet animals, though we did not make it there!

The closest big thing to Hana is Wai'anapanapa State Park, where Black Sand Beach is the big attraction. You do need to have a reservation and pay a small fee to get in here, but it's totally worth it.

You're given a two hour time slot at the Black Sand Beach and are expected to leave after your time slot is up. However, I don't know if there are any repercussions because, while we did leave the beach after our two hours, we did a walk around for about 30 minutes and certainly no one did anything.

The Black Sand Beach is very rocky and the rocks/sand are very hot, so make sure you have sandals. Additionally, there is an incredible trail to the left of the beach that is easy for kids and hikes up the cliffside to give you both an incredible view back to the beach and of another cove on the other side of the cliff where there are no people at all.

Down the road from Hana is a lava tube that you can explore, but as of June 2026, it was closed for archeology work, so I don't know when it will be reopened. If you are looking for a more traditional beach experience, you can go down to Hamoa Beach where all the locals go.

Wailua Falls - Maui Hawaii

Finally, you can also finish off the Road to Hana which technically goes to Kipahulu. On the way there, you can stop at Wailua Falls and swim in the extremely tall waterfall. If you reach the entrance to Haleakala National Park, inside there is the Pipiwai Trail and the Seven Sacred Pools. These are supposed to be two of the best hikes on Maui, but our kids were just not up for it.

One other, much easier and closer, hike to the Hana Maui Resort leaves literally from the parking lot for the hotel. It is a hike up the hill to Fagan's Cross, which you can see from pretty much anywhere in Hana.

Final Thoughts

Hana is a beautiful place. Staying there was so relaxing and felt like heaven on earth to me.

While many people do the road to Hana in a day, stretching out the trip to stay two nights in Hana was the best decision of the trip.

I am so thankful that we had a peaceful, beautiful setting like the Hana Maui resort to do it in.

If you are travelling the road to Hana and have the capacity to fit in an overnight stay, I highly recommend this resort - ESPECIALLY if you have Hyatt points to spend!
