Trying to decide between Disney’s Lookout Cay vs Castaway Cay? Here’s how the two Disney Cruise Line private islands compare, including beaches, food, kids activities, and what families should know.
If you're planning a Disney cruise, visiting one of Disney’s private island destinations in the Bahamas is usually a highlight of the trip.
For years, Disney Cruise Line guests visited Castaway Cay, Disney’s original private island.
But Disney recently opened Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, and after visiting both islands, we were surprised by how different they feel.
While Castaway Cay has the nostalgia factor, we actually preferred Lookout Cay by a lot.
The beach is stunning, the water play areas for kids are incredible, and the celebration of Bahamian culture makes the whole experience feel unique.
When you are booking a cruise, one of the biggest deciding factors is the itineraries. You might pick a specific cruise just to visit a specific island, so you want to know what you will be getting.
Here’s how Lookout Cay vs Castaway Cay compare, and which one we think is better for families.

Lookout Cay vs Castaway Cay
Here is a quick comparison of the two Disney islands.
| Feature | Castaway Cay | Lookout Cay |
|---|---|---|
| Opened | 1998 | 2024 |
| Vibe | Classic Disney beach day | Bright, cultural, modern |
| Beach quality | Nice | Absolutely stunning |
| Water slides | In the ocean | On land |
| Walking distance | Short | Longer |
| Overall experience | Fun but more basic | Fresh, beautiful, memorable |
The Beaches: Lookout Cay Wins
Both islands have beautiful beaches, but Lookout Cay’s beach completely blew us away.
The water is incredibly clear and the beach feels more natural and wide open. The sand is pink with crushed shells.
Castaway Cay is a great Bahamian beach - but the sand and water feel brown in comparison.
Castaway Cay Beach
Castaway Cay’s beach is still lovely and very convenient.
Things families like:
- calm water
- easy access from the ship
- lots of chairs
But after seeing Lookout Cay, it felt a little more developed and less naturally beautiful.
I will say that there are plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas on Castaway and you will NOT be disappointed by the beach if this is the only island you go to!

Lookout Cay Beach
Lookout Cay’s beach is genuinely breathtaking.
Things we loved:
- incredibly clear water
- huge beach area
- beautiful scenery
- soft, pink sand
This beach was second only to Bermuda for our favorite beach we've ever been to.

I will say that the beach is more narrow, with less chairs on the beach. If you want a good seat you need to be up and at em and off the ship early.

Nature and Exploring
Both islands offer a chance to step away from the main beach areas and explore a quieter side of the island. If you enjoy walking, exploring, or seeing a different view beyond the beach chairs, both Castaway Cay and Lookout Cay have nature areas worth visiting.
Castaway Cay: 5K Trail and Lookout Tower
Castaway Cay has a 5K loop trail that you can walk, run, or bike. The path winds through the island and includes a lookout tower where you can climb up for beautiful views of the ocean and surrounding area.
Because most cruise guests stay near the beaches, the trail often feels quiet and private once you get away from the main areas. It’s a fun option if you want to move around a bit during the day.

The main downside is that the trail can get very hot, and much of the scenery is similar stretches of sandy island landscape.
PS - if you do the 5k trail, be sure to go to the bike rental hut and ask for a (free!) 5k medal!!

Lookout Cay: Nature Trail, Lighthouse Views, and Sea Caves
Lookout Cay has a shorter nature trail, but the destination at the end makes it absolutely worth the walk.
The trail leads to a dramatic area with cliffs, caves, and a panoramic view of the ship and the far end of the island. The scenery here feels more rugged and natural compared to the beaches.

If you can time your visit for low tide, you can explore around the caves and rocky shoreline even more. For us, this area ended up being one of the highlights of the entire trip.

Kids Water Play Areas
Both islands have water play areas for kids, but Lookout Cay’s splash area is incredible.
Castaway Cay: Splash Pad and Ocean Play Structures
Castaway Cay does have a splash pad area called Spring-a-Leak, but it’s honestly pretty underwhelming. It’s basically a small area with maybe a dozen little squirts of water coming out of the ground. Any kid out of diapers is probably not going to be very impressed. We’ve actually sat there and watched families walk up excitedly, realize what it is, and leave pretty quickly.

There are also two floating play structures in the ocean with climbing areas and slides (Pelican Plunge and the nearby platform). These are definitely fun for bigger kids.

Smaller kids can use the slides if they wear a life jacket, but you do have to swim out to the structures, which makes it less ideal for younger or less confident swimmers.
Overall, it feels like there’s a bit of a gap in the middle at Castaway Cay — the splash pad is very baby-level, while the ocean play structures are better suited for bigger kids.
Lookout Cay Splash Area (Rush Out Gush Out)
Lookout Cay doesn’t have the floating ocean slide structures like Castaway Cay, but instead it has a large splash playground called Rush Out Gush Out.
This area is basically a water play structure on land with two big tube slides, water dump buckets, squirters, and climbing features all built into a colorful playground-style setup. Kids can run, climb, slide, and get soaked the whole time.

Our kids absolutely loved this area. It felt fun, bright, and brand new compared to other splash pads we’ve seen.
Another nice bonus is that it’s right next to a smoothie stand (paid), which makes it really easy to grab a cold treat before or after the kids play.

I’d say this splash area probably tops out around age 10 or so. There aren’t big thrill slides for older kids like the ocean platforms at Castaway Cay. But for preschool and elementary-aged kids, this setup is pretty much perfect.
The Junkanoo Celebration
One of the most unique parts of Lookout Cay is the Junkanoo parade and cultural celebration.
This celebration brings Bahamian culture to life through:
- music
- dancing
- colorful costumes
- interactive performances

It makes the island feel much more connected to the Bahamas rather than just a private cruise beach stop.
This was one of the most memorable parts of the day and I really appreciated the acknowledgment of Bahamian culture.

The Walk to the Beach
One thing people mention a lot about Lookout Cay is the longer walk from the ship to the beach.
Yes, it’s longer than Castaway Cay.
But honestly? It wasn’t a big deal for our family.
We even carried our daughter part of the way back and it still didn’t feel like a huge issue.

There is also a tram system that helps with part of the distance.
If someone has mobility challenges, Disney can provide golf cart transportation as well.
For most families, the walk is a minor inconvenience compared to how beautiful the island is.
Does Castaway Cay Feel Dated?
Castaway Cay is still fun and classic Disney.
But after experiencing Lookout Cay, Castaway Cay does feel like it could use some updates and upgrades.

Lookout Cay feels:
- newer
- more vibrant
- more thoughtfully designed
It’s clear Disney put a lot of effort into creating something fresh.
I would love to see them install a new waterpark on Castaway, and add some nods to Bahamian culture.

Finally, it's worth noting that while we have been to Castaway twice in the past, our most recent cruise had our stop at Castaway cancelled due to weather. It was sunny and beautiful... but tides and wind meant we could not dock safely.
Needless to say this was VERY disappointing and we were told it's not a totally rare occurrence due to the setup of the dock at Castaway. I'd love to see if Disney could make changes to the dock area to make it easier to dock there in windy weather.
Our Honest Opinion
After visiting both islands, Lookout Cay was easily our favorite.
The beach is more beautiful, the water play areas are fantastic for kids, and the cultural celebration adds something really unique.
Castaway Cay is still a fun stop on a Disney cruise.
But if we had to choose?
We would pick Lookout Cay every time.
Both islands offer a wonderful beach day on a Disney cruise.
But if you're wondering which one stands out more, Lookout Cay feels like the future of Disney’s island destinations.
It’s beautiful, colorful, and packed with fun experiences for families.
