Make oversized pool noodle shamrocks for your yard with this easy St. Patrick’s Day DIY. A budget-friendly outdoor decoration that’s big, festive, and surprisingly simple to make.
March is one of those fun little in-between months. Winter is finally ending, spring is starting to peek through, and St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect excuse to add a little silliness and color to your home.
I love decorating for the “smaller” holidays because it doesn’t have to be a huge production to feel fun for the kids.
Last month I made giant pool noodle hearts for our yard for Valentine’s Day and they were such a hit that I knew I had to make a St. Patrick’s Day version.
So this month we added some giant shamrocks to the yard made entirely out of pool noodles!
They’re lightweight, inexpensive, and super eye-catching in the yard.

How to make XL Pool Noodle Shamrocks
Here’s how to make these big, festive shamrocks using pool noodles!
Supplies needed
This is the quantity needed to make one 4-leafed shamrock.
- 5 green pool noodles
- zip ties
- scissors
- large serrated knife
- cutting board
- rebar or wooden stake for mounting
Steps to make
STEP 1: Create the shamrock leaves
Start by making the shamrock “leaves.”
Take one pool noodle and cut a 45° angle off one end using a serrated knife and cutting board.

Now fold the noodle in half so the ends meet. Once folded, cut a matching 45° angle off the other end.
When the two angled ends come together, they should form a pointed teardrop shape.
Don’t worry if it’s not perfect — once the shape is secured it will look great!

STEP 2: Secure the leaf shape
Grab a zip tie and push it through one end of the noodle and then through the other end so the two angled cuts stay together.
Tighten the zip tie about 75% of the way so the shape holds but still has a little flexibility.
Flip the leaf over and repeat the same thing on the back with another zip tie.

Once both zip ties are in place, tighten them fully and trim the excess zip tie.
You should now have one large teardrop-shaped leaf.

Repeat this process until you have 3 leaves for a shamrock, or 4 leaves for a four-leaf clover.
STEP 3: Connect the leaves
Lay all of your leaves flat on a table and arrange them in a circle so they look like a shamrock.

Take another zip tie and thread it through the zip ties on each leaf to connect them together in the center.
Once everything looks good, tighten the zip tie to pull the leaves together into a circular shape.

Trim the excess zip tie.
Now your shamrock leaves are connected!
STEP 4: Add the stem
Take your fifth pool noodle and place it across the bottom of the leaf circle to act as the stem.
Use zip ties to attach the stem to the zip ties holding the leaves together.

I used three zip ties spaced along the stem to keep everything secure and help it hold its shape.
Once everything feels sturdy, trim the excess zip tie ends.
Now you have a giant pool noodle shamrock!
STEP 5: Display in your yard
To stand the shamrock up in your yard, hammer a piece of rebar or a wooden stake into the ground using a mallet.

Then slide the hollow center of the pool noodle stem right over the rebar.
The shamrock will stand upright and look adorable in your yard!

Repeat the process to make as many shamrocks as you want. A little cluster of them together looks especially cute.
